On October 29, 2026, the Florida Department of Education said hackers had breached the Florida Student Financial Aid website, the state's main portal for college scholarships and grants including Bright Futures, and that about 4.9 million people may have been affected. The department said it learned of the unauthorized access on October 19. Depending on the person, the exposed data includes names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, home addresses, phone numbers and email addresses.
The department said it stopped the unauthorized activity and notified the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the attorney general's office. It has not said who was responsible or how the attackers got in, and no group appeared to have publicly claimed the attack.
The department said current aid and eligibility for scholarships, grants and loans were not affected. It advised users to watch their financial accounts, review their credit reports and consider a fraud alert or credit freeze.
