On 29 October 2026, attackers took about $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance's hot wallets on ten blockchains. Most of it moved within about 20 minutes. It is the largest crypto theft on record, more than four times the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in 2025.
On 31 October the FBI said North Korea was responsible. Blockchain analytics firms TRM Labs, Chainalysis and Elliptic attribute the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking group.
Binance suspended withdrawals while it investigated. It first pointed to a compromised engineer's laptop, and later said it had found additional points of breach. The exchange says customers will not bear the loss: it set aside more than $6.34 billion and had replenished 90% of the stolen assets by 31 October. Tether, Circle and others froze about $2.7 billion to $3 billion of the stolen funds.
This is a developing story, and figures may change as the investigation continues. If you lost money, had funds frozen or couldn't withdraw because of this incident, add yourself to this case.
