From 2003 to 2015 the US military issued dual-ended Combat Arms earplugs made by Aearo Technologies, which 3M acquired in 2008. Hundreds of thousands of current and former service members later sued, saying the earplugs were defective and left them with hearing loss and tinnitus. It became the largest mass tort litigation in US history.
In August 2023 3M agreed to pay $6 billion through 2029 to resolve the claims, without admitting liability. About 249,000 claimants registered to take part.
