HyperFund, also marketed as HyperVerse and HyperTech, sold online "memberships" from June 2020 that promised daily rewards of 0.5% to 1% until an investor's money doubled or tripled. It claimed the rewards came from large-scale crypto mining, but US prosecutors say it had no such operations. The SEC says the scheme raised more than $1.7 billion worldwide before it collapsed in 2022.
On 29 January 2024 the SEC sued co-founder Sam Lee, an Australian living in Dubai, and the Justice Department charged him with conspiracy to commit securities fraud and wire fraud in what it called a $1.89 billion scheme. Lee has not been tried, and news reports in June 2026 said he remained at large. Promoter Brenda Chunga pleaded guilty to the same charge and is due to be sentenced in January 2027. Promoter Rodney Burton pleaded guilty to an unlicensed money transmitting conspiracy and was sentenced to 32 months in prison in July 2026.
