In March 2022 attackers took control of five of the nine validator keys securing the Ronin Network, the blockchain built for the game Axie Infinity, and withdrew about 173,600 ether and 25.5 million USDC from its bridge. The theft, worth about $620 million at the time, went unnoticed for six days.
In April 2022 the FBI attributed the attack to North Korea's Lazarus Group and APT38, and the US Treasury sanctioned the attacker's address. Sky Mavis, the developer behind Ronin, raised money from investors to reimburse users.
