Purdue Pharma, the maker of the painkiller OxyContin, pleaded guilty in November 2020 to federal criminal charges, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, over how it marketed the drug. States, cities, tribes and thousands of individuals sued the company and its owners, members of the Sackler family, saying the marketing fuelled the US opioid crisis.
In November 2025 a federal bankruptcy judge confirmed a plan that provides about $7.4 billion for victims, states and local governments, including $6.5 billion from Sackler family members, paid over 15 years. Purdue will be dissolved and its business transferred to a new company owned by a nonprofit foundation. Sackler family members have not admitted wrongdoing.
