Wirecard, a German payments company that had joined the DAX index of Germany's largest listed firms, said in June 2020 that €1.9 billion shown on its balance sheet, supposedly held in trust accounts in Asia, most likely did not exist. Days later it filed for insolvency, wiping out shareholders.
Former CEO Markus Braun has been on trial in Munich since December 2022 on charges including commercial fraud, market manipulation and false accounting. He denies the charges, and the trial was still under way in October 2026. Former chief operating officer Jan Marsalek fled Germany in 2020 and remains at large.
