The US Federal Trade Commission alleged that Amazon used deceptive sign-up screens to enroll customers in Prime without their consent and made the subscription hard to cancel. On 25 September 2025, three days into the trial in Seattle, Amazon agreed to pay $2.5 billion: a $1 billion civil penalty and $1.5 billion in refunds for an estimated 35 million customers. It did not admit wrongdoing.
Automatic refunds of up to $51 began in November 2025, and other eligible customers could file claims until 27 July 2026. By September 2026 Amazon had paid more than $845 million.
A revised court order then raised the cap to $200 per customer and made all remaining payments automatic, extending them from 1 October 2026 to members who used 11 to 20 Prime benefits in a year.
