On 21 February 2025 attackers stole about $1.5 billion in ether from Bybit, a Dubai-based crypto exchange, during what looked like a routine transfer out of one of its cold wallets. At the time it was the largest crypto theft ever recorded.
On 26 February 2025 the FBI publicly attributed the theft to North Korea, naming the activity "TraderTraitor." Bybit said it covered customer losses and that client assets remained backed one-to-one. Investigators have traced how the stolen funds were laundered through decentralized exchanges and cross-chain bridges.
