Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, agreed in December 2022 to pay $520 million to settle two US Federal Trade Commission cases. The FTC alleged that Epic collected personal information from children under 13 without parental consent, turned on voice and text chat by default and used design tricks known as dark patterns to push players into unwanted purchases.
Epic agreed to a $275 million civil penalty for violating the children's online privacy rule, the largest the FTC had ever obtained for breaking one of its rules, and to $245 million in refunds.
The FTC sent 629,344 refunds worth more than $72 million in December 2024 and 969,173 worth over $126 million in June 2025, nearly $200 million in all. Claims closed on 9 July 2025, and the FTC said it expected to pay more in 2026.
