Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, a Nigerian Instagram influencer known as "Ray Hushpuppi," conspired to launder money from business email compromise scams, bank cyber-heists and other online frauds. His schemes included laundering funds stolen from a bank in Malta in 2019, tricking a New York law firm into wiring about $922,857 and defrauding a businessperson in Qatar who sought a $15 million loan to build a school. Prosecutors said the schemes in his plea deal caused more than $24 million in losses.
Abbas was arrested in Dubai in June 2020 and expelled to the United States. He pleaded guilty in April 2021 to conspiracy to engage in money laundering, and on 7 November 2022 a federal judge in Los Angeles sentenced him to 135 months in prison.
He was ordered to pay $1,732,841 in restitution to two victims: $922,857 to the law firm and $809,983 to the businessperson in Qatar.
