Mt. Gox, a Tokyo bitcoin exchange, filed for bankruptcy protection in February 2014 after saying it had lost nearly all of the 850,000 bitcoins it held, 750,000 of them belonging to customers. The coins were worth about $500 million at the time. In March 2014 it said it had found 200,000 bitcoins in an old wallet it had believed was empty.
In March 2019 a Tokyo court found Mark Karpelès, who ran the exchange, guilty of manipulating data and gave him a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence, suspended for four years. It acquitted him of embezzlement.
The rehabilitation trustee began repaying creditors in bitcoin and bitcoin cash on 5 July 2024. In October 2026 it said repayments were largely complete for creditors who had finished the required procedures, but many others had not been paid, and it moved the repayment deadline to 31 October 2027.
