In September 2015 the US Environmental Protection Agency revealed that Volkswagen had installed software in diesel cars that detected emissions tests and turned on full pollution controls only while being tested. On the road, the cars emitted nitrogen oxides at up to 40 times the legal limit. About 11 million vehicles worldwide were affected.
In 2016 Volkswagen agreed to a settlement in the United States worth about $14.7 billion, including up to $10 billion to buy back or fix cars and compensate owners. In 2017 it pleaded guilty to federal criminal charges and agreed to pay $4.3 billion in criminal and civil penalties. Several executives were charged in the US and Germany.
